Products Description
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, commonly abbreviated as CMC and also known as cellulose gum, is a carboxymethyl‑modified cellulose derivative and one of the key anionic cellulose ethers. It is synthesized via the chemical reaction of natural cellulose with sodium hydroxide and monochloroacetic acid. As an anionic polymer, its molecular weight ranges from several thousand to millions.
CMC occurs as white to milky‑white fibrous powder or granules, with a bulk density of 0.5‑0.7 g/cm³. It is virtually odorless, tasteless and hygroscopic. The material disperses readily in water to yield clear colloidal solutions, while remaining insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. A 1% aqueous solution typically exhibits a pH ranging from 6.5 to 8.5, and delivers optimal performance under near‑neutral conditions at pH 7. Its viscosity drops drastically when the pH value rises above 10 or falls below 5.
This polymer displays favorable thermal stability. Solution viscosity rises rapidly at temperatures below 20 °C and changes moderately at 45 °C. However, prolonged heating above 80 °C will trigger colloid denaturation, accompanied by notable loss of viscosity and deterioration of overall performance. CMC maintains good stability within alkaline media, yet it is prone to hydrolysis under acidic circumstances. Precipitation will take place when the pH decreases to 2‑3 or when multivalent metal salts are introduced into the system.

Products Application
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) acts as a versatile thickener, stabilizer and emulsifier, finding broad‑scale deployment across multiple industrial sectors.
1.Food Applications: Food‑grade CMC delivers outstanding thickening, emulsifying, shaping, water‑retention and stabilizing performance. Incorporated into food formulations, it helps lower production costs, optimize product quality, refine sensory taste and extend shelf‑life. It is widely applied in beverages, canned goods, confectionery, pastries, meat products, biscuits, instant noodles, frozen desserts, soybean milk, yogurt, fruit juice and many other foodstuffs. The practical usage and dosage should be adjusted according to specific formulation requirements.
2.Pharmaceutical Applications: As a polysaccharide‑derived material with favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose enjoys extensive utilization within pharmaceutical manufacturing. It can serve as a tablet binder, suspending agent for liquid preparations and auxiliary excipient for various topical formulations to meet diverse pharmaceutical processing demands.
