Tricresyl Phosphate (TCP) is an isomeric mixture with a faint pungent odour. Of its three isomeric forms, ortho‑ and meta‑isomers occur as liquids, whereas the para‑isomer exists as crystalline solids. It is synthesized through the reaction between cresol and phosphorus oxychloride under catalysis by aluminium‑based catalysts.
TCP serves two primary industrial purposes: recovering phenol residues from wastewater generated by gas‑processing plants, and functioning as a plasticizer within the plastics sector. As plasticizers improve the flexibility of polymeric materials, adjusting TCP loading can substantially modify plastics’ flexibility, hardness, water‑resistance and flammability properties. In certain formulations, TCP content in polyvinyl‑based systems may reach as high as 50 %.
It is important to note that TCP poses significant human health hazards. Exposure via ingestion, inhalation or dermal absorption may trigger neuropathy, paralysis of hands and feet, and can prove fatal to both humans and animals.

Product Application
Tricresyl Phosphate acts as a plasticizer for vinyl plastic manufacturing, a flame retardant, and a solvent for nitrocellulose. It is also employed in cellulosic molding compounds, used as an additive in extreme-pressure lubricants, and serves as a non-flammable working fluid for hydraulic systems. Furthermore, it can function as a lead scavenger in gasoline, as documented in Yust and Bame’s US Patent 2889212 issued to Shell in 1959. Another application of this product is the sterilization of certain surgical instruments.
