Tetrahydrothiophene is a cyclic thioalkane and the saturated analogue of thiophene. It occurs as a colorless, transparent and volatile liquid. Though insoluble in water, it is fully miscible with organic solvents including ethanol, benzene and acetone. It delivers a strong, disagreeable and long‑persistent odor, with an airborne detection threshold as low as 0.01 ppm. This compound shows no corrosive effect on gas‑handling equipment or pipeline gaskets, and it does not trigger olfactory desensitization in human users. Benefiting from these superior characteristics, it is widely adopted as an odorant for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas, serving as a favorable substitute for traditional odorizing agents such as ethyl mercaptan.
