Polypropylene is an anisotactic polymer that exists in both low and high molecular weight forms.

The low molecular weight polypropylene is produced by passing propene at moderate pressure over a heated phosphoric acid catalyst supported on an inert material at approximately 200°C, resulting in the formation of trimer and tetramer products.

The high molecular weight polypropylene is obtained by polymerizing propene in an inert solvent such as heptane, in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of trialkyl aluminum and a titanium compound.

The final product is a mixture of isotactic and atactic polypropylene, with the isotactic form being the predominant component.
Polypropylene is widely used as a thermoplastic molding material for various industrial applications.

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic material widely used in a broad range of applications, including packaging, labeling, textiles, and more.
Due to its excellent processability and low production cost, PP is one of the most extensively produced polymers, particularly in the automotive industry.

Virgin polypropylene shows good resistance to photo-oxidation and thermal oxidation under moderate temperature conditions. However, it is relatively sensitive to various environmental aging factors, such as heat, light, and radiation, resulting in a limited service temperature range.

When exposed to high temperatures or irradiation environments, the tertiary hydrogen atoms in polypropylene chains are prone to oxidation reactions with oxygen. It is well recognized that PP degradation under outdoor conditions is influenced by both light exposure and temperature.

In addition, polypropylene can undergo photo-degradation, as certain molecular chains are affected within the UV wavelength range of approximately 310–350 nm.
