Sodium hypophosphite monohydrate is a vital inorganic salt featured with strong reducing capacity. It occurs as colourless monoclinic crystals, pearl‑like crystalline particles or white crystalline powder. Odour‑free with a salty taste, this compound exhibits high solubility in water. It is also soluble in ethanol and glycerol, yet insoluble in ethyl vinyl ether. It remains comparatively stable under dry storage conditions, while displaying slight hygroscopicity upon exposure to humid air. When heated above 200 °C, it decomposes rapidly and releases phosphine (PH₃), a toxic and spontaneously flammable gas.
