Products Description
Methanesulfonic acid (CH₃SO₃H, MSA) is a potent organic acid. In the atmosphere, substantial quantities of MSA are generated via chemical oxidation of dimethyl sulfide, and it is biodegradable, breaking down into carbon dioxide and sulfate. Compared with mineral acids, MSA features lower toxicity and reduced corrosiveness, earning it recognition as a green‑grade acid. Its aqueous solution is widely used as a reference electrolyte for electrochemical applications.
Chemically categorized as an alkanesulfonic acid, MSA carries a methyl group directly bonded to the sulfo functional group. It occurs as a metabolite of Escherichia coli, and is classified both as an alkanesulfonic acid and a one‑carbon compound. It is the conjugate acid of methanesulfonate anion.

Products Application
Methanesulfonic acid functions as an acid catalyst for esterification, alkylation and condensation. Its suitability stems from low volatility and favorable solubility in organic media. It contributes to the synthesis of starch esters, oxidized wax esters, benzoic acid esters, phenolic esters and alkyl esters.
It reacts with sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofuran to yield borane‑THF complex. High purity and absence of chloride render it qualified for battery‑system uses. Within the pharmaceutical sector, it supports the production of APIs including telmisartan and eprosartan.
Other uses cover ion chromatography. It supplies carbon and energy for selected gram‑negative methylotrophic bacteria and takes part in peptide deprotection.
