Products Description of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid CAS#149-57-5
2-Ethylhexanoic acid, also known as isooctanoic acid, is a carboxylic acid organic compound with the molecular formula C8H16O2 and an approximate molecular weight of 144.22. It typically appears as a colorless, transparent, oily liquid with a mild odor. Its physical properties include a melting point of -83°C, a boiling point of 227.6°C, a relative density of 0.9105 (20°C), a refractive index of 1.4241 (20°C), a flash point of 127°C, an autoignition temperature of 377°C, and a viscosity of 7.73 mPa·s (20°C). It is soluble in hot water and ether, and slightly soluble in ethanol.
2-Ethylhexanoic acid shows strong acidity and can react with sodium hydroxide to form carboxylate salts. It can also undergo esterification with alcohols under strong oxidizing conditions to produce esters such as triethylene glycol di(2-ethylhexanoate). In addition, it can react with alkali metals and heavy metals to form metal soaps, including zinc, lead, cadmium, and barium salts.

Product Application of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid CAS#149-57-5
Most of 2-ethylhexanoic acid is converted into metal salts such as zirconium, cobalt, molybdenum, and zinc, which are widely used as paint driers and heat stabilizers in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. Tin salts are commonly applied as additives in plastic pipe production, while barium and cadmium salts are used in plastic calendering products and as stabilizers.
In addition, 2-ethylhexanoic acid and its esters are applied in pharmaceuticals, fungicides, metal lubricants, and cosmetics. Its glyceride serves as an excellent plasticizer. The compound is also an important raw material for the pharmaceutical product carbenicillin and is used in the synthesis of various dyes and fragrance
