Product Description of Poly(propylene glycol) CAS No. 25322-69-4
Poly(propylene glycol) is a polymer with the molecular formula H(C₃H₆O)ₙOH. It is a colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid that is non-volatile and non-corrosive. Commercially available products typically have molecular weights ranging from 400 to 2,050. Lower molecular weight grades are water-soluble, whereas higher molecular weight grades have limited water solubility but are readily soluble in oils, various hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, ketones, and esters.
With hydroxyl groups at both ends of the molecule, it can undergo esterification reactions to form monoesters or diesters. Monoesters can serve as non-ionic surfactants and can further react with alcohols to form ethers. Poly(propylene glycol) acts as a solvent for vegetable oils, resins, and paraffin wax, and is widely used in the production of alkyd resins, emulsifiers, demulsifiers, lubricants, and plasticizers. It is produced through the condensation of propylene oxide and propylene glycol under high pressure or in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
