It is produced using natural green plant tissues, such as silkworm excrement, clover, alfalfa, bamboo, and other foliage, as raw materials. Extraction is carried out using organic solvents like acetone, methanol, ethanol, or petroleum ether. The process involves replacing the central magnesium ions of the chlorophyll molecule with copper ions, followed by alkali saponifying to remove the methyl and phytol groups, thereby forming carboxyl group and yielding the disodium salt. Consequently, sodium copper chlorophyll is classified as a semi-synthetic pigment. Other chlorophyll series pigments that share similar structures and production principles include sodium iron chlorophyll and sodium zinc chlorophyll.

Chlorophyllin is a class of water-soluble salts and a semi-synthetic derivatives of chlorophyll. Primarily existing as a sodium/copper derivative, it is used both as a food additive and in alternative medicine.
In alternative medicine, Chlorophyllin may be used to help reduce the odor of urine or feces and to improve the quality of life for patients with fecal incontinence, a condition associated with spinal cord injury, bowel cancer, psychotic disorders, terminal illness, or other medical issues. It is also available as an herbal supplement.
Chlorophyllin can bind to certain mutagenic substances, including polycyclic aromatic compounds such as benzo[a]pyrene and dibenzo{a,i}pyrene. As a topical preparation, it is used for odor control and the treatment of wounds, injuries, and other skin conditions, including radiation burns.
