Propylene oxide (PO), also known as 1,2-propylene oxide or methyl ethylene oxide, is a colorless, flammable, and volatile liquid with an ether-like odor. It has a molecular weight of 58.08 and a relative density of 0.823 (25°C). Key physical properties include a melting point of -112.13°C, a boiling point of 34.23°C, a refractive index of 1.3664, a flash point of -35°C (closed cup), and an ignition temperature of 420°C.
It exhibits vapor pressures of 1.04×10⁴ Pa at -20°C, 2.80×10⁴ Pa at 0°C, 6.53×10⁴ Pa at 20°C, and 7.59×10⁴ Pa at 25°C. Propylene oxide is soluble in water (40.5% at 20°C and 60% at 30°C) and is miscible with most common organic reagents. It forms a binary azeotrope with water (1%) with an azeotropic point of 39.9°C, and can also form azeotropes with dichloromethane, ether, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, pentene, and other solvents.
