Ammonium bicarbonate, also named ammonium hydrogen carbonate (abbreviated as ABC), is a nitrogen‑bearing chemical fertilizer, colloquially known as “gas fertilizer”. It occurs as white powder or block‑shaped crystals with a faint ammonia‑like odour.
The compound dissolves readily in water, forming an aqueous solution of weak alkalinity, whereas it is insoluble in ethanol and acetone. It tends to absorb moisture and form lumps upon storage. Chemically, ammonium bicarbonate is unstable: it decomposes gradually at ambient temperature into carbon dioxide, ammonia and water, and its decomposition speed rises notably with increasing temperature and humidity.
